Should I use conditioner on my dog?
We are often asked whether you should use dog conditioner after you’ve used dog shampoo, so we wanted to share with you our main benefits of using conditioner when bathing your dog. These benefits have been supplied to us by the award-winning dog groomer and educator, Julie Harris.
The key benefits of using conditioner:
- Helps to separate the hair in dense / thick coats and removes loose hair, which makes the drying process quicker and brushing easier
- Helps to remove knots and tangles in the dog’s coat
- Helps to moisturise the dog’s skin & keeps the coat hydrated
- Best defence against skin infections
To deeply understand the benefits of conditioner, you must firstly understand the shampoo process.
Shampoo is negatively charged and designed to remove dirt. There is nothing restorative in shampoo. A dog’s coat that is negatively charged will damage more easily and attract dirt and static, which again damages the coat. Damaged coat loses moisture and becomes dull and brittle, which isn’t desirable as their coat won’t be soft and silky to touch. This is where conditioner comes to the rescue!
Conditioners are positively charged and so reduce static, removing the harmful outcomes that a negative coat can cause. Conditioners improve the manageability of the dog’s coat by smoothing down all the raised cuticles trapping in moisture and enhancing shine. Some conditioners have great restorative ingredients that plump up the hair and increase elasticity and strength, great for a coat that has been matted or for coats that are requiring stretch / fluff drying.
2-in-1 shampoos have a complex advanced formula of ingredients that are formulated to get on well and complement each other. Julie Harris Professional Grooming Purify & Nourish is a 2-in-1 shampoo, as well as Mutneys Anti-Tangle Shampoo & Conditioner.
